The Mobile Smartphone – Is it For You?

JR Lang asked:

There are a lot of options in mobile phones available on the market today. The different models of phones, while all capable of making calls, actually have very different features and capabilities for many different uses. One mobile phone of great interest for many is the smartphone models. A smartphone goes far beyond that of providing the ability to make and receive calls.

For many the option of a smartphone is one that is essential for business and personal use. A smartphone is a mobile phone that is a mini computer that has a full operating system, full keyboard and other intricate and advanced features. The two most popular models of smartphones are the RIM Blackberry and the Apple iPhone.

While both are smartphones, each has it own personality. The Blackberry is much more business oriented while the iPhone is more of a hip and trendy model, and comes with full iPod capabilities for music and video entertainment.

Whichever smartphone you may choose both come with standard features, which take communication, entertainment and mobile computing to a whole new level.

Top Useful Features of Smartphones:

1. Email and Internet: Access to email and Internet browsing is one of the biggest attractions of smartphones. Many a businessperson spends all of their waking hours with their smartphones, checking and sending email with the comfort of a full keyboard. This is also a great way for students, moms, and most anyone to stay in touch with family and friends, do some mobile shopping or anything else that requires web browsing.

2. Full Operating System: Smartphones have full operating systems for mobile computing. They are capable of word processing, copy and paste of documents and most any other computer functions. And with full keyboards, computing on the run is never easier than with a mobile smartphone.

3. Applications:
Both the Blackberry and iPhone have specialized applications that are available for download. These Apps include everything you can imagine, from stock updates to Apps for pets. Many find that these make the phone so much more useful, since they can choose from hundreds of different Apps to make life easier, more entertaining and for providing information directly from a pocket sized hand-held device.

4. Big Touch Screen Display:
Another cool feature of smartphones, like the Blackberry Storm and the Apple iPhone are the big screen displays with touch screen capability. High-resolution big screens that allow for navigation of features with the touch of a fingertip on a graphic interface provide just another benefit to these smartphones.

5. Camera and Video: All smartphone come with a still camera as well as a video recorder. For many this eliminates the need to buy a separate digital camera or camcorder and really makes the smartphone the all-in-one gadget.

What smartphone and calendar/address book/task manager desktop software is a good alternative to Palm?

The Caped Cryptid asked:

I want to switch from a PDA to a smartphone. I currently have the Palm TX and feel it’s time to combine cell phone with PDA. I’m ruling out Palm, Apple and Microsoft smartphones and MS Outlook (I would prefer to use a Palm Desktop equivalent).

So my question is: Excluding Palm, Apple and Microsoft solutions, what smartphones and calendar/address book/task manager desktop software are good alternatives to the Palm TX and Palm Desktop?

SciPhone I68 Mobile Phone – A Smaller Size, A Fast Performance And Java Are A Winning Combination

Rae Edwards asked:

There’s no denying that the shake and tilt iPhone clones are a success. Consumers love being able to shake the phone to advance songs and media without having to fumble around and scroll. There’s other features to like too. The fact they are inexpensive and unlocked saves us a lot of money on phone costs and on AT&T or other expensive plans. Dual sim means that we can have two phone numbers on one phone so that we are always available.

There are many of these phones on the market right now. Examples are the HiPhone i32, the CECT A380i, A88, and the A8+.

The latest edition, the SciPhone (aka CECT i68), has all of the standard clone features, but it has added a few new ones. First, it’s thinner and smaller, which is why it’s sometimes called a “mini HiPhone.” It’s also added an E-book reader and an FM radio, but the addition that is getting the most attention is the latest version of Java.

Java enables all sorts of productivity and gaming software possibilities, including MSN, Office, and PowerPoint, to name only a few.

Now, if you can tear yourself away from the games (which is hard for me), you can read, edit, and email documents which makes this gadget a great mobile productivity tool as well.

This cell phone still has all of the smartphone specifications that you would expect, including: a generous 3.2 inch touch screen; dual sim slots; slide unlock; a 1.3 mega pixel camera which also serves as a webcam; Bluetooth 2.0; full MP3 / MP4 capabilities; web browsing, emailing and messaging via GPRS and WAP 2.0; and 2GB of memory.

Don’t let the small size of this mobile fool you. It’s super fast and it houses a slew of the latest features inside a tiny package. I love the E-book reader even though I thought I would never use it. When I am stuck waiting somewhere, it’s really easy to finally get around to reading the e-books I constantly down load but never read.

The SciPhone still has the loud Chinese speakers that we’ve been spoiled by. The 1.3 MP camera is actually pretty good. And since it starts at only about $150, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

Does a smartphone being bounced around affect the lifespan of the phone?

flyingwombatz asked:

I know that hard drives, it affects their failure rate – but those are hard drives, not solid state type things. Does if affect the lifespan of a smartphone if it’s bounced around in the mail system like 10 different places, in the manner shippers do – plane, truck, throwing it around, etc?

Thanks
